noise
if it goes when you press the clutch, then it could be thrust bearing or 1st motion shaft bearing.

Gear selector issue II
If the scroll lock pins are tight and there isn't wear in the radial movement of the selector rod you may have bent the selector fork inside the gear box (or it has snapped off).
An alternative is that the motion shaft has snapped and is allowing the laygear to work on 3rd & 4th but nothing for 1st & 2nd. (had this on another British Leyland gearbox but it wasn't a Mini - the principle is the same though)
Let's hope it it a worn rod mechanism as the other route is expensive.

wheel bearing replacement
Not very technical really, just a case of wacking the old ones out.
Note which way the bearings and seals are before you start, then knock out the old ones being carefull not to damage the hub. You will see each bearing comes in two parts, don't mix them up, they should stay as a pair, inner and outer.
Carefully knock the bearing in with a mallet keeping the bearing 'square' to the hub by knocking around the outer rim in a circular motion.
Before you fit the tapered washer and nut, Haynes recommend 1st fitting a flat washer and tightening the hub to the driveshaft to make sure the bearings sit right.

Grind/Rattle noise Clutch v Gearbox
You need to be very specifid about when you here the noise.
can you here it
with the engine running, out of gear, foot off the clutch
with the engine running, out of gear, foot on the clutch
with the engine running , car in motion, foot off the clutch in 1 2 3 and 4th gears
with the engine running, car in motion, foot on the clutch in 1 2 3 and 4th gears
in the noise present if you kill the engine, and dip the clutch whilst the car is in motion.
it can be gearbox bearings, idle gear noises or primary gear noises, you might need pen heart surgery to identify the problem, but from your postings it could also be a clutch issue, as you stated you were struggling to get 1st gear.
